about

1. Amokura o Te Ao ~ Wisdom Keeper of the World

Hine Te Kakara Tītīraukura o Nga Rangi daughter of Kiwa Matua,
seven times born from wisdoms abode Kurawaka Ahorangi, Amokura
of the stream of all knowing. The weaver of the teaching pathways
linking the points of light of Te Whare Kōpuni o Te Ao. Te Mana o
Nga Huarahi ~ The Authority of the Trails, Te Mātāpuna ~
Grandmother of the still pond of reason, gazing from the eye of
Tuatara from a high, towards a great red cloaked star.

2.Ngā Huarahi o Tira ~ The Pathways of Tira

Tira the great Waitahā Te Pae Ārahi ~ Trail Keeper, muanga of Huāki
and Paparōa. Who placed the mana of Paparōa me Huāki in the lands
of Tairea, one with the trails and trail systems, the heartbeat. The
stars Te Kahu Ātea have been sighted our two ruru kaitiaki have
called the opening of the trails of Rongo Marae Roa. Ko te ao o te
kowhai when the kōwhai blooms and the riroriro called the snows
have melted spring has arrived, open the trails. Kōhatu, kōiwi carriers
and nga kaiwhakangau begin their journeys on their many pathways
of Te Waka Aotea Roa o Nga Atua

Te haere kiore tahi nei ~ Like the rat that travels in single file

3. Pariwhakaoho ~ The Startling Cliffs
Raureka a grandmother of the trails we hear your name whispered in
the cool mountain breeze .The trails that taught you about the spirit,
mind, heart, faith, hope, and love. That was sung in place into the
different elevations of this whenua by the grandmothers long before
your time. We remember your service to the great trail systems with
your two loyal kuri ~ canine companions. The great sacrifice you
made, dying the way you lived, serving peacefully on the pounamu
trails of Rongo Marae Roa.

Nga whenua moko ahi ~ The trail making land fires

4. Ngā Pae Ārahi a Tangaroa~ The Keepers of the Sea trails

As the Tipuna Comet Tāhana Rerenga a Io looms high in the night
sky, We Waitahā eke tohorā the whale riders follow our tuākana
Paikea, Kewa, Parāoa... on the ocean rivers, long tides of Te
Moananui a Kiwa. We Nga Kaihautū the wind eaters, born to a life
upon the waves of Tangaroa Matua. Our pahi ~ double hulled canoes
are lean and fast in line with our purposefulness perfectly balanced
like our spiral galaxy for facing the perils of Te Waha o Parata.

Te pūtātara karanga o Paikea ~ The welcoming horn of the humpbacked whale

5. Ngā Kaiwaiata Awa ~ The River Singers

Every year Te hikoi i nga awa ~ we walk our sacred awa from the
mountains to the sea, to record the wellbeing of our local awa.
Together we compiled this information both big and small into
mapping waiatarere ~ long gentle flowing songs to pass forward the
state of mauri of the water quality. The song was added to or
subtracted from the previous year’s song; some waiatarere took days
to sing. The aquatic life, the flora upon her banks were all noted for
we are the river singers of Waitahā.

Tōku awa ko tōku ora ~ My river is my life

6. Te Waiata Ara o Kehu ~ The Trail Song of Kehu

As Te Pae Ārahi Kehu contemplated Ngata Whakarū ~ the great snail
crossing the beginning of the pounamu trail. His mind song envisaged
the long line Nga Pae Ārahi ~ Trail Keepers of Waitahā times. The
rhythm of their waewae tapu ~ sacred footsteps, of the stone
walkers, the bone carriers, the trail keepers of Te Rākau Kōwhai.

Kua pūkekotia ~ Experienced in life well-travelled

7. Arawaru

Nga Kaitiaki Kuri o Ranginui ~ The Sacred Dogs of Grandfather Sky
guiding nga wairua ~ the spirits across the great river back to their
star houses of origin. E Anupihi Te Kaiārahi, huakina i nga ara opener
of the ways on the eight fold path of Te Koruruanui. Pīata mai koutou
kua whetūrangitia koe ~ glitter & shine you who have passed on.
Journey well to the heavens to the gathering place of the ancestors.

Kua tae e au to rere wairua e ~ It is now time to fly in spirit

8. Te Awa o Āniwaniwa ~ The Rainbow River

Hine Āniwaniwa married Waikohu ~ Water Vapour, and their
children were all forms of the Rainbow whose songs radiated with
light. Our wairua journeyed again from the stars to the landing place
of the souls then in this birthing valley our voices first sounded under
the rainbow hued heavens. Sacred clays of Hine Ukurangi glistened
on our mother’s bodies that birthed us upon kōhatu whanau ~
birthing stones to dance in Te Ao Mārama ~ The World of Light. The
young moko whispers the names of Nga Atua ~ Elementals of light in
her dreaming and they respond back whistling on winds of
Tāwhirimātea through the valley of Āniwaniwa, they call
Hoki mai wairua E.

Ka puta ko Āniwaniwa ~ Grandmother Rainbow was born

Waitahā kawe Wai tahā ~ Waitahā the Water Carriers

The third album release from the Waikirikiri Kōpuni Taonga Pūoro
collective Kiki Pounamu, takes us on ancient journey with
Waitahā kawe Wai tahā ~ Waitahā the Water Carriers.
Internally we have transported Te Wai o Rongo Marae Roa ~
The waters of peace across the ancient pathways of time and
space, the highways, the waterways. Sound mapping the
heavens, lands, waters and the inner pathways of mind and
spirit songs. Te Tai Ātea o Ranginui me o Rehua, Nga Tai Roa
o Tangaroa me Nga Moko Whenua o Papatūānuku. Nga Uri o
Hine Naumairangi, Te Aitanga o Kurawaka Nga Pae Ārahi the
trail wisdom keepers, connecting the great circle dance,
recorded in our long songs never forgotten within the deep
immortal sacred waters of Kura, Rākai me Pākau o Waitahā.
It is water returning to itself, Ko koe ko wai, ko wai ko koe,
you are the water and the water is you.

Ka moe Te Hihi o Te Ra ki a Waihirangi ~~~ The sparkling sunlight married the watery skies
