As her day begins Kaiwhakairo pahi (waka builder) slowly walks through the great forest of Tāne carefully listening to the bird and insects sounds for a rhythm for her whao (chisel) work, on the great Taurapa (stern post) of waka. Carving the important maps of the great sea trails that this waka will embark upon.
